SITUAÇÃO EPIDEMIOLÓGICA DO CÂNCER DE MAMA NA MACRORREGIÃO DE SAÚDE JEQUITINHONHA

Abstract

Introduction: Breast cancer is the main cause of morbidity and mortality in the world, but with great potential for a cure if detected early. It is, therefore, a public health problem, especially in developing countries like Brazil. In these countries, there is a high rate of social inequality, so women with low socioeconomic status are the most affected, as they have little information about preventive methods and, consequently, do not know the diagnoses. In this scenario, it is necessary to establish an overview of the performance of mammography in macro-regions, which could help in the development of public health policies in the localities. Objective: To analyze the epidemiological situation of breast cancer in the Diamantina Macroregion. Methodology: This is a retrospective quantitative study, carried out through a survey of data from the Cancer Information System (SISCAN), on breast cancer in women aged 50 to 69 years, living in the Jequitinhonha Health Macroregion, in the period from 2017 to 2022. 31 municipalities are part of the Diamantina Macroregion. Results: For this study, the number of exams performed in 2020 was lower compared to other years. Women aged 65 to 69 undergo fewer exams and in relation to the periodicity of exams, the 2-year interval is still the most common for mammograms. The collected data were stored in Microsoft Office Word software and Excel, version 2010, for interpretation and construction of tables and graphs. Conclusion: Prioritizing women's health with a focus on promoting and facilitating access to mammography is important for the early detection of breast cancer. In this way, it is feasible to strengthen prevention and treatment initiatives, promoting improved results and the well-being of all women in Brazil, including those belonging to the Vale do Jequitinhonha Macroregion.
