As ações do Estado brasileiro para a promoção da língua, da literatura e da cultura do Brasil no Paraguai

Abstract

This paper presents a retrospective overview of the actions by Brazil´s Government towards the promotion of the Brazilian language, literature and culture in Paraguay in most recent decades. It aims at an assessment of the country´s current actions, mainly the ones related to the Lecturers Program (“Leitorado”) and the opening of a Bachelor of Arts Course in Portuguese Language at the Universidad Nacional de Asunción, as well as the connection of these actions with the latest political events involving the two countries within Mercosul context. The goal is to highlight the perspective in which the Lecturers Program and the Bachelor of Arts Course in Portuguese Language play a tug-of-war game that ends up defining its activities for on the one hand as cultural and educational nature and on the other as of a political scope. It also raises questions whether the Brazilian Government actions suffice (or not) in regards to the promotion of Brazil´s language, literature and culture in Paraguay.
