Abstract

This work presents an analysis of the demonstrative pronouns in Brazilian Portuguese through a corpus composed of Brazilian novels and newspapers from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century. The study aims at showing that such linguistic elements change according to the textual genre in which they occur. I also compare my results with Cambraia’s analysis which focuses on plays from the same period (2012). The results have demonstrated that the more related to the written tradition the genre is the more frequent is the use of F1 (‘este’ and its inflections); otherwise, genres related to oral traditions display a higher frequency of F2 (‘esse’ and its inflections).
