Abstract

This article presents a multidisciplinary study on innovation within the context of doctoral programs in Industrial Engineering and Management and Design. It constitutes an important part of the theses developed and is characterized as an intersection between the studied themes with two distinct and complementary perspectives. Innovation is currently recognized as one of the main competitive advantages for organizations. The generation of innovation, in turn, is increasingly seen as a collaborative process, where factors external to organizations have a great impact on the results achieved. The main objective of this study, therefore, is to contribute to a better understanding of the external factors that facilitate and hinder the innovation process in organizations. To this end, a systematic literature review is carried out, analyzing articles already published on the subject, in order to understand what has already been studied on the topic and identify possible areas for future research. Based on the analyzed articles, three main approaches were identified regarding external aspects that impact the innovation process of organizations: a relational approach, which deals with facilitators or barriers to the innovation process arising from the organization's relationships with external actors; an environmental approach, which addresses topics such as economic uncertainty, government policy, and legislation; and a market approach, which addresses topics related to the sector of activity, market technology intensity, and competition. It is concluded that the success of the innovation process, with respect to external factors, is related to minimizing environmental and market barriers and maximizing relational facilitating factors. This article contributes to defining topics for future research, especially research within doctoral programs in Industrial Engineering and Management and Design, and also provides useful information for decision-making by managers.
